"How the Bay Area Can Afford Old Age"

Authors:

Bruce Chernof and Steven P. Wallace
Summary:
Many Americans mistakenly believe that Medicare will pay for their long-term-care needs, but it only pays for short-term rehabilitation. The cost of care can run into the thousands of dollars a month at a time when incomes are stagnant or declining. According to a recent poll completed by the SCAN Foundation and UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, two-thirds of Californians say they are worried about being able to pay for their health and long-term-care needs. Sixty-three percent of those polled thought they would someday need this kind of support; however, research shows that 70 percent of Americans age 65 and older will need long-term-care services at some point in their lives. The CLASS Act CAN be a solution to their fears.
